A look into the rise of Barbie: what is #barbiecore and what does it represent? Also, what are the best all-pink fashion items available to buy now?

As a lover of pink I am currently spoilt for choice. With the approaching July 2023 release of 'Barbie', the amount of pink fashion items in stores is vaster than ever. This not only pleases me as a 90's kid who owned an Aqua 'Barbie Girl' cassette tape, but also because pink and nostalgia are uplifting. Like mermaidcore and spring '23s bright, on-trend colours, a rise in popularity of all things Barbie is an example of "dopamine dressing". (marieclaire.com, 2023) In a time of challenge we are turning to comforting, fun and imaginative forms of dressing as a form of escapism.

The Barbie doll, introduced in 1959, was created by Mattel co-owner Ruth Handler. The first Barbie was marketed as a teenage fashion model, and it was the first children's doll to be sold with an adult shaped body. (historyhit.com, 2022) The design of Barbie has caused controversy in the past with many consumers disliking the doll's unrealistic, thin proportions and a lack of diversity and depth in the doll's representation. Over the decades, Mattel have faced their fare share of scandal surrounding Barbie including a 1992 "talking Barbie doll criticized by a national women's group for saying 'math class is tough'". (nytimes.com, 1992) However, the company have made gradual positive adjustments over the years with changes including the release of the first doctor Barbie in 1973 (creations.mattel.com, no date) and the introduction of the first African-American Barbie and Hispanic Barbie in 1980. (historyhit.com, 2022)

Mattel have also previously expressed their own distaste regarding the depiction of Barbie. In 2002 it was reported that Mattel had lost a lawsuit against MCA Records and others who had taken part in the production of Aqua's 1997 pop song 'Barbie Girl'. (billboard.com, 2002) Mattel had apparently taken offence as they believed the song violated their copyright. They also didn't want consumers to wrongly assume that they backed a song filled with innuendos (ig.ft.com, 2022) and featuring lines such as 'I'm a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world'. (billboard.com, 2002)

However, regardless of past controversy, Barbie has gradually evolved into a doll with much more positive associations. In 2020, Mattel released inclusive Barbie dolls including a doll with vitiligo and a doll with no hair. (vitiligosociety.org, 2020) This shows that Mattel now acknowledge the impact that representations of beauty in toys can have on the self-esteem of young people. With such inclusivity in place the creativity and imagination of Barbie can be enjoyed without the burden of negative, restrictive stereotypes.

Barbiecore has also been hailed as a Gen Z and millennial feminist statement. The idea being that the out-dated view of the bright pink Barbie aesthetic as a "bimbo style" is being flipped on its head. (businessinsider.com, 2022) With pink so strongly associated with femininity, the idea of a connection between pink and superficiality can be seen as a criticism of femininity itself. The wearing of pink can now be seen almost as the wearing of a flag that symbolises pride in femininity. According to The Take, "Barbiecore is a rejection of the pressure to avoid girliness in order to get taken seriously by guys – and it comes with a feeling of feminine power." (the-take.com, no date) Also, at the same time, the development of Barbie as a 3D, accomplished character and as an inclusive brand elevates the long associated colour pink.

The all-pink world of barbiecore isn't only limited to dolls, the cinema and fashion, it has also made its way into interior design. According to House Beautiful, "barbiecore is the new design trend to completely obsess over". (housebeautiful.com, March 2023) So, if you want to make your home look like Barbie's Malibu Dreamhouse it will be easier now than ever before. I didn't realise, but apparently Barbie's Malibu Dreamhouse is a real place, owned by Mattel, in Malibu, California. In 2019, Mattel advertised the chance to stay for two days at the property through Airbnb. (news.airbnb.com, no date) Airbnb also made a charity donation to Mattel's Dream Gap Project, an initiative that seeks to close the Dream Gap, an issue revealed by research where "starting at the age of five, many girls begin to develop self-limiting beliefs and think they're not as smart and capable as boys." (shop.mattel.com, no date) Mattel have also stated that early indicators show the Dream Gap may be a more severe issue for Black girls and that they therefore plan to contribute to the research of this area. Let's dive into #mermaidcore: what are its key features, what is it inspired by, who has worn it best on the red carpet and what are the best mermaidcore buys available now

Mermaidcore, a contraction of "mermaid" and "normcore" (lofficielusa.com, 2021), has been making huge waves in the fashion industry. Firstly, let's look into the trend's key visual features. According to She Knows, "the mermaidcore trend is exactly how it sounds: you dress and style your look to that of what a mermaid would wear." (Delilah Gray, sheknows.com, March 2023) This can include a wide variety of imaginative features, including floor length gowns, pastel colours, #metallic materials, ruffles, fringe, halternecks, cut-outs, shell details and of course sequins. It is a particularly colourful, fun, creative and glamourous style of dressing that can lift spirits.

Since filming of the new 'Little Mermaid' movie began in January 2021 (timeout.com, 2022), it has been a strong source of inspiration for designers. In her March 2021 article, 'Mermaidcore is More Than a Fashion Trend', Daphne Dorgelo reported that "ocean-inspired fashion is on the rise this season". She ascribed it to a need for escapism during challenging times and the rising interest in nature and sustainability:

"In times of uncertainty due to the coronavirus, fashion's hankering for a different world is undeniable. Without much clarity about the future, it's easier to disappear into the deep waters, where there is lively flora and fauna, but also tranquility and strength. There's also greater interest in nature and sustainability which helps fuel this aquatic-inspired trend." (Daphne Dorgelo, lofficielusa.com, March 2021)

With "dopamine dressing" continuing to be popular (marieclaire.com, March 2023), it isn't surprising that this trend is set to continue in strength throughout S/S '23. It will also be heightened by the release of the new 'Little Mermaid' movie, starring Halle Bailey, which premieres in theatres on 26th May 2023. (vulture.com, 2023) Below is the trailer for the movie:

There will also be another notable mermaid in cinemas this summer as singer Dua Lipa will play a blue-haired mermaid Barbie in the upcoming 'Barbie' movie. 'Barbie' will premiere in theatres on 21st July 2023.

Dua Lipa has a daring, creative fashion sense and has been photographed in mermaidesque outfits outside of her 'Barbie' role. One example of this is a denim fishtail dress, from the Bluemarine S/S 23 collection, which she wore in November 2022. (wmagazine.com 2022) Byrdie have labelled this particular look as fitting into the "Dark Mermaid" category, a style that they describe as being focused on the seductive qualities of mermaidcore, in reference to the mermaids of ancient Greek mythology:

"Mermaids have captured imaginations for thousands of years—in Greek mythology, sirens seduce sailors to a watery death with just their voices." (Maria Santa Poggi, byrdie.com, December 2022)

A look at Anya Taylor-Joy's love of vibrant clothing, the bright, mood-boosting colour trends for spring '23 and some bold-hued pieces available to buy now

Glamour magazine have described Anya Taylor-Joy as a "true style chameleon" with an "ever-changing aesthetic and willingness to try something new." (Charlie Teather, glamourmagazine.co.uk, 2022) Whilst she isn't afraid to wear a wide range of styles, the aspect of her wardrobe that stands out to me is the repeat appearance of bold, block colours. Also, I love that her accessories tend to be brightly coloured or in a contrasting print so they don't tone her outfit down. She often wears numerous, dramatic accessories with a bright dress and it makes her outfits memorable. I love the drama and retro-look of her bright purple Dior dress with a leopard print hat and gloves in the image below. It shows that you can mix dramatic fabrics, without a garish result, as long as they are carefully chosen. Taylor-Joy became the global ambassador for Dior in 2021 and is regularly seen in Dior outfits chosen by her stylist, Law Roach. (Natalie Mitchie, fashionmagazine.com, 2021)

As well as being aesthetically pleasing, I love the uplifting and energizing quality of her bright colour choices. It has been reported that, with the challenges of recent years, people have been turning more to vibrant colours in fashion as a mood booster. Marie Claire refer to this as a "widespread maximalist movement known as dopamine dressing". (Emma Childs, Marie Claire, March 2023) With a number of highly saturated, mood-boosting colours listed as on-trend for spring '23, I've shared some more of Taylor-Joy's most striking, vivid outfits below as inspiration:

As you can see in the images below, Anya Taylor-Joy seems to particularly like wearing bright orange outfits.

With it being spring, a wide range of energising colours have been listed as trends for the season. Let's look at some online fashion publication's top colour recommendations for this spring '23:

Marie Claire recommend rich blue (including cobalt and deep azure), "mellow yellow" (shades of daffodil and pale yellow), all shades of pink, pale lavender, true red and black. (Emma Childs, marieclaire.com, March 2023) Black is a reliable choice but for spring I prefer the uplifting nature of the other recommendations. Magenta is another colour worth noting as 'Viva Magenta' is Pantone's 2023 colour of the year and fits into the 'all shades of pink' category. (hola.com, 2022) I really love magenta for S/S wear as it brings to my mind the intense colour of bougainvillea and reminds me of the Mediterranean.

'Viva Magenta'. Pantone's colour of the year.

To "make your outfits feel fresh for 2023", Who What Wear recommend choosing violet, black, lime, "blinding whites" and saffron red. Also, they confidently list these five colours as being "the most prevalent in the new collections" showing that they will be abundant in stores for the weeks to come. (Maxine Eggenberger, whowhatwear.co.uk, March 2023)

When choosing which trends to follow, Editorialist recommend that you "Recreate the most coveted color stories from the runways, and you’ll be set for the months ahead." Editorialist focus on a selection of pastel and "icy and futuristic" hues. They recommend lilac, limoncello, powder blue, black and slate grey. If choosing a piece of grey clothing for spring, I prefer grey teamed with a bold colour such as green, blue or yellow for a more uplifting look. The Spring '23 Issey Miyake collection included slate grey coupled with a bold lime green.

Another colour that has been indicated as important for S/S '23 is silver. Vogue have stated that while "mood-boosting rainbow hues are abundant and here to stay – fashion appears to be bewitched by shiny silver." (Ellie Pithers and Joy Montgomery, vogue.co.uk, March 2023) Silver looks stunning on its own and can also look beautiful when teamed with brighter tones.

Next, with Anya Taylor-Joy's vibrant and uplifting style as inspiration, let's look at some standout items in the boldest spring '23 colours:

Whilst powder blue is peaceful and calming for day wear, cobalt blue is a more dramatic choice for evening wear.

Ultimately, whilst on-trend shades will be featuring heavily in stores, it's always best to wear whichever colours you like the most and feel your best in. Let me know what you think of Anya Taylor-Joy's bright ensembles, which of my outfit picks you like and which Spring '23 colour trends are your favourite in the comments. I really love the ASOS cobalt blue jumpsuit, the pink Oasis dress, the red River Island jumpsuit and the lime Zara blazer.
